How to prepare for a scholarship exam: a class-by-class plan for Std 1 to 12

A practical plan to prepare your child for an online scholarship exam — general knowledge, life skills, English, reading aloud and an exam-day checklist.

A scholarship exam rewards a child who is calm, curious and used to the format. None of that needs expensive coaching. This guide gives you a two-week plan you can run at home, written around the three sections of the ANOQR Scholarship Exam — general knowledge, life skills and English — but useful for any online exam.

Know the format first

The ANOQR exam is one hour in a single sitting:

SectionTimeWhat it checks
General knowledge15 minutesIndia and the world, science around us, history, geography, sport, environment
Life skills & character15 minutesChoosing the kind, honest, safe or sensible thing in a real situation
English language30 minutesVocabulary, grammar, listening, reading, writing and reading aloud

Each section has its own clock and cannot be reopened once it ends. Telling your child this in advance removes most of the panic on the day.

A two-week plan

Days 1–3: General knowledge, 15 minutes a day. Read one news headline together and talk about it. Ask three questions from the science or social science textbook. Younger children can name states, capitals, animals and festivals.

Days 4–6: Life skills, 10 minutes a day. Ask "What would you do if…?" — a friend is being teased, a stranger online asks for your photo, you break something at a neighbour's house. There is no trick: the exam rewards the honest, kind and safe choice.

Days 7–11: English, 20 minutes a day. Read a short passage aloud and answer questions about it. Learn five new words a day and use each in a sentence. Older students write a short paragraph and check it for tense and spelling.

Days 12–14: Full practice. Sit one timed practice in a quiet room, on the device you will use. Then rest the night before.

Class-by-class focus

  • Std 1–2 (ages 6–7): listening for a word, matching pictures, building a sentence from word tiles, reading one short sentence aloud.
  • Std 3–5 (ages 8–10): synonyms, opposites and tenses; a short story with questions; writing three sentences on a topic.
  • Std 6–8 (ages 11–13): idioms, spotting errors, reading for inference, a 60-word paragraph.
  • Std 9–12 (ages 14–17): one-word substitution, reported speech, the tone of a passage, commonly confused words, a 100-word opinion paragraph.

The read-aloud question

One English question asks the student to read a sentence aloud. It is marked for clarity and pronunciation, and an Indian accent is not penalised. Practise by reading a sentence slowly, pausing at the commas, in a normal speaking voice. Mumbling and rushing lose more marks than any accent.

Exam-day checklist

  • A phone, tablet or laptop, charged, with a working internet connection
  • A microphone (most phones have one) and headphones or speakers for listening
  • One quiet hour, with nobody helping — leaving the exam screen is recorded
  • If the connection drops, sign in again from the dashboard; the clock keeps running, so reconnect quickly

After the exam

Whatever the result, your child's free participant courses worth ₹25,000 unlock the moment they submit. Use them. A student who does not win can re-attempt at any time — even in the same month — and only the best attempt in a month counts. Many children do noticeably better the second time simply because they know the format.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need coaching for the ANOQR Scholarship Exam?

No. The questions follow what a curious student in that standard should know, in any board. Fifteen to twenty minutes a day for two weeks, at home, is enough preparation.

Is the exam in English only?

The English section tests English. The general knowledge and life-skills questions are written at the level of the standard so that a student in any board can follow them.

What if the internet stops during the exam?

Sign in again from the dashboard and continue. The clock keeps running while you are away, so reconnect as quickly as you can.

Can my child practise before the real exam?

Yes. Practice rounds are at anoqr.com/scholarship/practice, and every student who sits the exam also gets courses worth ₹25,000 to keep improving.
